Textual Analysis

Denotation:
In this Magazine, A picture of a young model is presented in a medium shot sowing only the top half of her body behind large wooden “M”.  She is dressed all in black and in black leather gloves. She is heavily made up and has been clearly photo shopped.  The model – “Miley Cyrus” a popular Pop and Country artist and actress’ name is written in a large font and goes completely across the screen.

Costume:
Miley Cyrus in editorial covers, souvenirs and action figures are situated with the colours purple, black and white. Here they’ve obviously added her theme colours and have used it in the text, her costume and the background. This is her trademark, and as a pop magazine, this draws the pop audience into reading and/or buying this magazine.
Coverlines:
The size of her image fills the page and leaves only a bit of free space on the sides of her for the sub-headings.

Masthead:
The Magazine logo is in large and bold font to fit the width of the page. This emphasises on the Brand and company of the magazine, manipulating the reader to always look out for that specific logo.

Denotation:
Here is a magazine cover from the established Pop magazine “Blender”. Again a female model is being used, who is a popular country singer who has broken into the pop charts. She although being a country singer is recognised as a pop icon which definitely draws the audience. A medium long-shot of the model Taylor Swift’s figure is elongated to fit the length of the page from top to bottom.

Costume:
She is dressed in black and white with however rocky edge look which doesn’t seem to display as a pop magazine.
Compared to the first magazine, there are more sub-headings, and in which stand out more as well. There are three basic colours used, black, White and blue.

Masthead:
Blenders masthead is very bold and bright and in a baby blue, with a diagonal ascending slash going right through it. All of it is in capital letters and is spaced out between eachother.

Introduction

My name is Sheryl Opoku-ware and I'm a current lower sixth form student at Christ the King in Lewisham. I'm studying Media Studies, Performance studies, Textiles and Business Studies. I chose Media Studies for one of my AS/A2 because I've always been curious to how the whole indusrty works on the written side and in the image and photography aspect. By the end of this course I would like to have a full understnading on Media Studies and use it later on in life as a career perhaps!
